Three Charged in Robbery

PORTLAND, OR, Jul. 9 – Three suspects in a Saturday morning grocery store robbery were arrested within 10 minutes of the crime after the store manager followed them and gave police a description.
Charged with first degree robbery and held in lieu of $10,005 bail each are James Lambert Thompson Willet, 26, Jay Jerold Varney, 33, and Sandra Collins Good, 28. Portland Police detectives said Willet and Miss Good were staying with Varney at 1223 SE Yamhill St.
Detectives said the principal robber was armed with a .38 caliber revolver.
According to detectives, Robert Hazlett, manager of the Kienow’s at 5544 E. Burnside St., followed the suspects for a short distance after signaling to a woman clerk to call the police.
Hazlett followed the suspects until they got into a van and drove off.
Detectives and uniformed policemen arrested Varney, Willet and Miss Good at the Yamhill Street apartment shortly afterward.
