Manson’s Followers Loyal: Female Group Says He’ll Go Free

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 26 — “He couldn’t kill anybody,” said the tiny, waif-like girl kneeling on the pavement.

She was talking about Charles Manson, the man a Superior Court jury had moments before found guilty of masterminding the murders of seven persons.

Sandy Good, 26, a petite blonde in purple slacks, a striped sweater and black sandals, assumed the role of spokeswoman for the little band of Manson’s female followers who have camped outside the Hall of Justice here during much of his seventh-month trial.

The girls took news of the conviction calmly and vowed to maintain their vigil on the sidewalk “until Charlie gets out.”

“We’ve been here for five months and we can be here forever,” she said. “The city’s not going to last that long. He’ll be out. All the people will be out — Angela Davis, Bobby Seale. There’s revolution coming. You’ve all judged yourselves.”

Miss Good and three other members of the “Manson Family” — Kitty Lutesinger, 20, Brenda McCann, 20, and Sue Bartell, 21, heard the verdict on a transistor radio.

A crowd gathered around them.

Miss McCann turned to the onlookers and asked, “Are you proud of it? They’ve convicted these people and you are next.”

The young women were sewing on a multicolored vest — a gift for Manson.

“We know we’re going to the desert,” Miss Good said. “Whatever happens, we’ll all go to the desert, Charlie too.”

The young women — among the few members of the “family” not jailed on various charges — have camped at the corner of Temple and Broadway since September. Arrested when they slept on the sidewalk in sleeping bags, they now keep a camper parked on the street nearby, moving it periodically “so we won’t get a ticket.”

“We’re staying here on this corner until Charlie gets out,” Miss McCann said.
