Manson Murders Mansion Torn Down
Saturday, May 28th, 1994
LOS ANGELES, May 28 — The home where actress Sharon Tate and four others were brutally slain in 1969 has been razed and a new mansion is under construction in its place.
The Benedict Canyon residence was being rented by Miss Tate and her husband, director Roman Polanski, when the murders took place on Aug. 9. 1969.
Polanski was not at the home when his wife, coffee heiress Abigail Folger, hair stylist Jay Sebring, Miss Folger’s boyfriend Voityck Frykowski and Steven Parent, a friend of the caretaker, were killed by Charles Manson followers.
Hollywood Agent Rudolph Altobelli owned the 3,200-square-foot home, along with a 2,000-square-foot guest cottage and 3 1/2 acres of land. He sold the estate to Al Weintraub in 1991.
Weintraub put the home on the market in 1992 for $4.9 million. In 1993, it was rented to Trent Reznor of the rock group Nine Inch Nails.
Now Weintraub is building an 18,000-square-foot Mediterranean villa. It’s expected to be completed early next year.
“We’ll try to sell it and if we don’t sell it, I’ll move into it,” Weintraub told the Los Angeles Times this week, adding the asking price would be $12.5 million.
