Manson Girl in Stockton Case is Released
Wednesday, January 3rd, 1973
STOCKTON, Jan. 3 – A charge of being an accessory in the murder of Lauren Willett has been dismissed by authorities against Lynette Fromme, a former follower of convicted killer Charles Manson.
Meanwhile, arraignment was continued yesterday in San Joaquin County Superior Court to Jan. 10 against four other suspects in the case charged with Mrs. Willett’s murder on Nov. 10.
They are Robert Monfort, 24; James “Spider” Craig, 33; Nancy Pitman, 24; Priscilla Cooper, 21. Monfort and Craig and another man, William Goucher, 23, also have been charged by Sonoma County authorities with the murder of Mrs. Willett’s husband, James, 26, last October.
During an appearance before Judge James Darrah, Monfort and Craig complained of not being able to contact their attorneys from Deuel Vocational Institution, where they are being held pending proceedings against them.
Miss Pitman complained of having to wear handcuffs to court but Darrah, who ordered that Craig and Monfort be allowed to make their telephone calls to attorneys, denied Miss Pitman’s request, contending it is a matter for security personnel.
Monfort, Craig, Miss Pitman and Miss Cooper are charged with murdering Mrs. Willett and then burying her in a shallow grave under a house at 720 W. Flora St.
Police uncovered the grave during a search of the property when officers went to the house to pick up Monfort on a robbery charge stemming from a previous liquor store holdup. Goucher, who already was in custody, also had been charged with the robbery of the liquor store.
