Manson Clan Man Seized In City
Thursday, February 12th, 1976
SACRAMENTO, Feb. 12 – Dennis “Father” Rice, one of the last hardcore members of the Manson cult not behind bars in recent months, was back in jail today following his arrest outside the Sacramento apartment of would-be presidential assassin Lynette Fromme.
An FBI spokesman said Rice, 36, was taken into custody by officers of the State Adult Authority for several parole violations. He is held without bail in San Francisco County Jail pending a parole hearing.
According to authorities, Rice was arrested Jan. 24 as he was getting into an automobile outside the apartment formerly occupied by Miss Fromme and Sandra Good, another Charles Manson disciple.
Rice pleaded guilty in 1973 of attempted robbery of a gun shop in Hawthorne with five other Manson cultists. A 10-minute gun battle with police erupted during the robbery attempt and three clan members suffered minor wounds.
Los Angeles police said the foray was a plot to get arms to break Manson out of prison.
Under terms of his parole, Rice was prohibited from leaving the San Francisco area without permission and from associating with followers of mass murderer Manson.
Rice was paroled from San Quentin Prison, where Manson also is housed, last Sept. 19.
Rice was said to have taken possession of Miss Fromme’s car after she was arrested Sept. 5 for attempting to assassinate President Ford.
Rice also served a 90-day sentence for conspiring to dissuade a witness by feeding her a hamburger laced with LSD during the Tate-LaBianca murder trial in 1969 and 1970.
