Krenwinkel Refused Parole for Eighth Time

FRONTERA, Nov. 23 — Charles Manson “Family” follower Patricia Krenwinkel was refused parole Wednesday for the eighth time in as many years for her conviction in the Tate-LaBianca killings.

Krenwinkel, 42, failed to convince the three-member Board of Prison Terms that she no longer poses a threat to society and that she has changed from the kind of woman she was 20 years ago.

The board, after deliberating for about 30 minutes, cited the brutality and heinousness of the murders in deciding to deny parole. Krenwinkel may seek parole in another year, the board ruled.

“She hasn’t changed that much,” said Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Stephen Kay. “I think she has ice water running through her veins.”

Krenwinkel, convicted in seven of the Manson cult slayings, is serving a life sentence in the California Institution for Women in China

During the hearing, board member LaRuth McReynolds commended Krenwinkel for her “squeaky clean” prison behavior, her college studies in the prison and her participation in other prison activities.

But McReynolds agreed with a psychiatric report that said there was “something missing” in Krenwinkel’s overall presentation of herself. The report, according to McReynolds, went on to say that Krenwinkel lacked spontaneity and was careful not to risk disfavor.

Krenwinkel sat stoically throughout the proceeding, speaking about herself mostly in general terms.

“I am not a violent person” she said. “I don’t even like screaming.”

She blamed the Tate-LaBianca murders on a combination of drugs, Manson’s influence and the need to feel accepted in the Manson family.
