Hinman Trial Witness Found

LOS ANGELES, Apr. 10 – A member of Charles Manson’s family, figuring prominently in the Gary Hinman murder case, has been arrested on suspicion of violating her probation.

Arrested at the Hall of Justice was Miss Mary Brunner, who came to Los Angeles from her home in Madison, Wis.

Miss Brunner allegedly was at the home of Hinman, 34, when he was fatally stabbed between July 25 and July 31.

It is believed she was to appear for the prosecution at the murder retrial of Robert Kenneth Beausoleil, 22, charged with Hinman’s murder.

Sheriff’s deputies reported she allegedly had violated probation on a conviction of passing bad checks.

She was booked at the Sybil Brand Institute for women, where she was jailed.

A previous witness at the Beausoleil trial has testified the defendant told him that he (Beausoleil), Miss Brunner and Susan Denise Atkins, 21, were at Hinman’s Topanga Canyon home when the musician was killed.

Miss Atkins also was charged with the murder and is scheduled to stand trial in Santa Monica April 23.

Miss Brunner has not been charged with Hinman’s death.

Miss Atkins additionally is a co-defendant with Manson, 35, in the Tate-LaBianca case.

The Beausoleil trial featured testimony from two witnesses who had known Manson and his family.

One, Michael Dennis Hendricks, 17, identified an automatic pistol allegedly carried by Beausoleil when he was at the Hinman house as the one Manson gave him (Hendricks) on Aug. 1.

Hendricks, in custody at the Norwalk Youth Authority, said he lost the gun about a week later in San Bernardino.

It is believed the gun was fired at the Hinman house during a struggle between the musician and his accused murderer.

The other witness was cowboy stuntman Randy Starr, who works at the Spahn Ranch.

He testified he gave the knife, allegedly used to stab Hinman, to Manson sometime last summer and he had seen Beausoleil carry it upon occasion.

Starr also identified a sword allegedly used by Manson to slash the side of Hinman’s face when the musician refused to hand over $20,000.

The witness claimed Manson was the only one who carried the homemade sword, which he sometimes kept in a scabbard on his dune buggy.
