Fromme Mails a Death Threat to EPA Chief

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 11 – Lynette Fromme, serving life for attempting to kill President Ford, has sent a death threat letter from prison to Russell Train, chief of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Fromme’s rambling letter was mailed from the U. S. Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego and reached Train in Washington, D. C. on Jan. 2.

The hand-written threat went out of the prison in a sealed Department of Justice envelope that she addressed. Postage was paid by the Department of Justice.

Warden J. D. Williams said that under department policy, the prison does not inspect “privileged mail” — communications between inmates and their attorneys or government representatives.

Williams said he was unaware of the incident until Friday, when FBI agents notified him they were coming to the prison to investigate.

Fromme’s letter addressed Train as “you weak mealy mouth,” and said in part:

“You are warned now from the International People’s Court who can be as mean as you are weak and that is beyond mutilation.

“As head of the EPA for the entire country you are warned and will have your own life and face shoved in the pollution which you allow to go on and on and on. The state of the country is clearly an example of your uselessness.”

The letter bore Fromme’s name and prison number and the initials IPR below a swastika in the style of the Charles Manson cult.

Fromme’s former roommate, Sandra Good, and another Manson follower, Susan Murphy, face federal charges of conspiring to mail letters threatening death to government officials and businessmen they consider enemies of the environment.

It was uncertain whether more charges might be brought against Fromme, who was sentenced to prison last month for her Sacramento assassination attempt.

Warden Williams did say she would lose her right to send “privileged mail,” however.
