Former Manson Associate Charged in 2 Robberies

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 30 — A one-time associate of convicted mass murderer Charles Manson has been charged with twice robbing a Glendora bank.

Kenneth D. Como, 43, pleaded not guilty Monday to federal charges that he robbed the Pomona Federal Savings and Loan branch last January of $6,962, and again in March of $6,448.

Como, who faces a parole violation charge stemming from the arrest, remained in jail.

U.S. District Judge Cynthia H. Hall set Como’s trial for November.

Como had been free since October, 1981, when he was released from Folsom state prison after serving a 10-year sentence for the robbery of a Hawthorne sporting goods store. He and five other followers of Manson obtained 140 weapons in the 1971 robbery, but Como was arrested a short time later after a shoot-out with police.

The clan apparently planned to use the weapons to hijack a jetliner at Los Angeles International Airport and execute a passenger each hour until Manson was freed.

At the time, Manson was in jail awaiting trial for the August, 1969, Tate-LaBianca murders. Como was in jail at the time of the murders.
