Ford Will Videotape Testimony on Fromme Incident

WASHINGTON, Nov. 1 — President Ford will give his videotaped testimony this morning on what he saw and heard when Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme allegedly threatened him with a loaded gun in Sacramento, Calif.

Press Secretary Ron Nessen said Ford has set up an appointment for 10 a.m. to make the videotape in the Old Executive Office Building. Ford will not have personal counsel present, Nessen told reporters.

But U.S. Atty. Dwayne Keyes from Sacramento will be on hand, along with Miss Fromme’s attorney.

There was no immediate word on whether news reporters would be allowed to be present or whether they would be permitted to view the videotape.

U.S. District Court Judge Thomas MacBride ordered Ford to give sworn testimony on videotape for Miss Fromme’s trial.

Keyes, after conferring with White House lawyers, had argued against videotaping the President’s testimony.

No president has ever testified in person at a criminal trial while in office.

Ford’s deposition was requested by the attorney for Miss Fromme, 27, a follower of convicted mass murderer Charles Manson. Miss Fromme is accused of pointing a .45-caliber pistol at Ford as he was shaking hands Sept. 5 in a park area outside the California state capitol.

The testimony sought from Ford is about whether he heard a clicking sound that might indicate if the trigger was pulled.

Although the weapon was loaded, police said that there was no cartridge in the chamber, and if the trigger was pulled the pistol would not have fired.

The White House said court rules preclude press coverage of Ford’s deposition in the Fromme case.

The videotape will be turned over to the court and will be shown only during the trial, a White House statement said.

Both defense and prosecution attorneys will receive a written transcript.

At the session in the Executive Office Building, the Navy Photo Center will provide the videotaping equipment and technicians to operate it.
