Ex-follower of Manson Sentenced

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 10 — A former follower of mass murderer Charles Manson was sentenced Monday to 30 years in prison for robbing the same suburban bank twice for a total of more than $13,000.

Kenneth Como, who pleaded guilty last month to robbing the Pomona Federal Savings and Loan Association branch in Glendora twice within three months, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Cynthia Holcomb Hall.

He was charged with robbing the bank of $6,862 Jan. 14, 1983, and taking $6,448 March 7.

Como, 44, served 10 years in Folsom state prison for his part in the robbery of a Hawthorne sporting goods store in 1971 in which 140 guns were taken. He was captured shortly after the robbery, after a gunfight with police.

Investigators said the group planned to use the guns to hijack a plane and execute one passenger each hour until Manson was released from prison. Manson, who was convicted in 1969 in the grisly Tate-LaBianca murders, was in jail waiting to testify in another trial at the time.

Como’s attorney, Henry Perez, charged Monday that his client had been treated more sternly by authorities because of his alleged association with Manson.

“For all too long, this association has followed Mr. Como,” said Perez.
