Manson’s Ex-Pal Gets An Attorney

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 26 – One of two former Charles Manson “family” members charged with the attempted murder and robbery of a Long Beach apartment house owner and his guest will be represented at his trial by a private attorney, Superior Judge Carroll M. Dunnum decided Wednesday.

Dunnum designated Ronald K. Perry as counsel for Vernon Ray Dean Plumlee, 20. He acted after Deputy Public Defender James Hartman told the court there would be conflict if both Plumlee and his co-defendant, Robert Eugene Russell, also 20, were represented by the same office.

The defendants, both Marine Corps deserters, are charged with attempted murder, burglary, robbery and grand theft in attacks last Sept. 26 on apartment house owner Jeffrey Hanham, 48, of 3416 E. Second St., Apt. E., and Robert Rivarola, 19, a visitor from Peru.

The youths, held in lieu of $62,500 bail each, are scheduled to enter pleas Dec. 2.

Rivarola suffered critical stab wounds and Hanham was less seriously injured in the attacks.

Plumlee and Russell stayed intermittently with the Manson “family” at Spahn Ranch, Chatsworth, a year ago. Plumlee was subpoenaed as a prosecution witness at Manson’s murder trial.
