Manson Scouted Home of ‘Beachboy’ Witness Says

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 20 – Hippie cult chieftain Charles Manson scouted the home of “Beachboy” entertainer Dennis Wilson the night he was “looking for” a murder victim, and ended up at the home of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, a witness testified today.

Movie and record producer Gregg Jakobson, on the witness stand in the Tate-LaBianca murder trial for the fourth day, identified an area near Will Rogers State Park as the home of the recording star.

Earlier, star prosecution witness Linda Kasabian had testified she went with the hippie leader in his search for “someone to kill” the night following the murders at the home of actress Sharon Tate last August.

She said they had stopped at several homes but rejected them as murder sites. They continued to drive around in an area, near Malibu where the “Beachboy” lived, she testified.

Jakobson, who has admitted being friendly with Manson, claimed all the girls al the ranch loved Manson and it appeared that the cult leader loved them in return. He described Manson as an “original thinker” who believed “if you killed someone, you’d be killing yourself.”

Although he said Manson claimed he was Jesus Christ, he added that the hippie “leader” felt “everyone had Jesus’ being in them.” Manson’s rapport with animals, the witness said, was unbelievable. Jakobson said his 175-pound St. Bernard who always challenged strangers, took an immediate liking to Manson.

Prior to the opening of court today a contempt hearing was held for defense attorney Ronald Hughes who failed to show up in court Monday because he was in jail. Hughes, who took the stand in his own defense, claimed he did not have the money to bail himself out. Judge Charles Older took the matter under submission.

Because of this delay, and the slowness with which the trial is progressing Judge Older ordered court to begin every day at 9 a.m. and continue until 4:30 with an hour and 45 minutes for lunch. This ruling will mean an additional hour and a half of court time each day.

Monday, Irving Kanarek, attorney for Manson, refused to halt the questioning of Jakobson despite obviously healed objection from the three other defense attorneys.

The three attorneys, it was learned, have instituted proceedings to substitute Kanarek from the case and take over the defense of the cult chieftan themselves, in an attempt to expedite the trial.

Latest estimates indicate the case may continue through January.

The burly Van Nuys attorney earlier had been the target of prosecutors who attempted to have him removed from the sensational murder case, charging him with “obstructionism.” A defense attorney earlier claimed Kanarek was “better than a third prosecutor” when he questioned some of the 64 prosecution witnesses to take the stand thus far.

The 35-year-old Hughes, who is representing Leslie Van Houten, one of the three female defendants, was arrested on the warrants Sunday and jailed overnight. He was arraigned in Santa Monica Municipal Court at the time the murder trial in Los Angeles Superior Court was scheduled to begin. Although released on a suspended sentence, Hughes did not make it back to the courtroom until the afternoon.

On trial with Manson and Miss Van Houten are Susan Atkins and Patricia Krenwinkel. The defendants, however, have not appeared in court for more than a week — since Manson attempted to attack the judge with a pencil.
