Prosecution Opens Case In Manson Trial

LOS ANGELES, Jul. 22 – The Prosecution opens its case against the “Manson Family” Friday with a parade of witnesses including one young woman member of the hippie cult said to have acted as a “lookout” during the Sharon Tate-LaBianca massacres.

Selection of six alternate jurors to backstop the regular panel of seven men and five women was completed Tuesday morning, five weeks after the trial began.

Deputy District Attorney Vincent Bugliosi will make a brief opening statement and then the state will present evidence seeking to prove that 35-year-old Charles Manson and three female followers are guilty of seven savage murders last August 8-9.

The Prosecution’s star witness, Linda Kasabian, 20, will take the stand Monday to tell what she knows of the murders of living with the nomadic cult at an old abandoned western movie set. She is expected to be granted immunity in return for her testimony.

The other prosecutor, Aaron Stovitz, revealed that the State also intends to call as an early witness Roman Polanski, the movie director husband of the slain beautiful blonde actress. He was in London at the time of the slayings. Polanski was expected to arrive in Los Angeles from Europe over the weekend.
