12 in Tate Jury Panel Want Out

LOS ANGELES, Jul. 6 – The third panel of 48 prospective jurors was brought into Los Angeles Superior Court today in the opening of the fourth week of the massacre murder trial of Charles Manson and three of his girl “followers.”

Twelve prospective jurors immediately asked to be excused from serving on the panel because they said they could not “presume the defendants innocent.” The reason was the same one used by 17 earlier prospective jurors who indicated that pre-trial publicity had colored their judgment.

The trial began its fourth week with an in-chambers conference between attorneys and the judge, a practice which is becoming more and more prevalent as the trial continues.

Charged for the Tate-LaBianca murders are the long-haired hippie cult leader, Susan Denise Atkins, 21, Leslie Van Honten, 20, and Patricia Krenwinkel, 22.
