Five Slain At Costly Home

LOS ANGELES, Aug 9 – Actress Sharon Tate, 26, who starred in television and film roles, was tentatively identified by police Saturday as one of five people slain at a Bel Air home.

Her husband, Roman Polanski — who directed the film “Rosemary’s Baby” and was renowned in the industry as a master of suspense and the macabre — was reported in Europe working on a film.

Police, responding to a phone call from a neighbor, found five bodies in and around the $200,000 home on a hilltop in an area where many entertainment personalities live.

One of the victims — who officers said was apparently Miss Tate — was found in a bikini-type gown. She had a white nylon rope around her neck and it was attached to the neck of a man and looped over a ceiling beam.

Police arrested a suspect at a guest house on the property.

Police said all five apparently had been shot. The woman and man were found inside the home, two men were found sprawled on the lawn and the fifth victim was in a car.

Miss Tate was pregnant, a Paramount spokesman said. The dead woman in the house was pregnant, police said.

A neighbor, Virgil Johnson, confirmed that Polanski and Miss Tate lived at the scene.

Miss Tate had starred in the television series “Beverly Hillbillies” and “Petticoat Junction”. She also had parts in the films “The Americanization of Emily” and “The Sandpiper”.
