Defense Asks Evidence In Tate Slayings

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 6 – Attorneys for Leslie Van Houten, one of six suspects in the Sharon Tate-LaBianca slayings, attempt a legal maneuver today aimed at forcing the prosecution to reveal its evidence in the case.

Lawyers for Miss Van Houten, 19, were scheduled to argue a motion for discovery of evidence, which if approved would let the defense know what evidence the prosecution has.

Miss Van Houten, who has been charged with two counts of murder and one count of conspiracy in connection with the slayings of Leno LaBianca, a wealthy grocer, and his wife, was to appear in court at the hearing.

Another defendant in the case, Linda Louise Kasabian, 19, also was scheduled to appear in court today to enter a plea to seven counts of murder and one count of conspiracy in the LaBianca slayings and five others at Miss Tate’s home in August.

In other developments, Deputy District Attorney Vincent T. Bugliosi, one of the prosecutors in the case, said orders to extradite two other defendants to California could signal a series of appeals which may reach the U.S. Supreme Court. However, Bugliosi would not comment on how long the appeals could possibly last.
