Manson Follower Free After 2 Years Prison

LOS ANGELES, Mar. 11 – One of mass murderer Charles Manson’s “family” members — jailed for robbing a surplus store to get guns to free the hippie leader — was released from prison and checked in with her parole agent in Sepulveda Monday, it was learned today.

Catherine “Gypsy” Share, released on parole March 3, was serving a 10-year-to-life sentence at the California Institution for Women at Frontera. She served a total of two years.

She left behind at the women’s prison three other Manson followers — Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkle and Leslie Van Houten — who were convicted with Manson for the nine grizzly Tate-LaBianca murders.

The 32-year-old war orphan was sentenced for the August 1971 gun raid of a Hawthorne surplus store and a holdup at a Covina beer distributing firm. She served a total of two years. Prosecutors at the time said both crimes were committed in an attempt to gather money and guns to help Manson escape from jail. Manson currently is in Folsom prison where he was transferred after an abortive escape attempt from Atascadero State Prison, where he had been shifted for treatment of a mental problem. The facility is for the criminally insane.
