Pal of Manson Surrenders in A Slaving Plot
Monday, January 11th, 1971
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 11 — Bearded Dennis Rice, an X-mark carved into his forehead, stood up in a Hall of Justice courtroom today and surrendered himself on a charge of conspiring to murder a state witness in the Tate-LaBianca murder trial.
The 31-year-old member of the Charles Manson family had been a fugitive since Dec. 18, when he and four other members were indicted for allegedly feeding teenage witness Barbara Hoyt an LSD-spiked hamburger in Honolulu.
Dennis, surrounded by other family members, came to the eighth floor of the Hall of Justice — where the Tate-LaBianca trial was recessed until tomorrow — and told reporters:
“This is where all the love is. It’s all locked up here. The game is over. The revolution is the end of the game.”
He then went into a courtroom down the hall from where Manson and three girl co-defendants are on trial, and surrendered before Judge Malcolm M. Lucas.
Rice timed his surrender to coincide with arraignment of the four others indicted with him on the conspiracy to murder charge. They are:
Steve Grogan, 19, who also is accused of murdering stuntman Donald (Shorty) Shea at Spahn’s Ranch, former headquarters of the Manson family.
Catherine (Gypsy) Share, 28, who last week gave birth to a premature son in jail. She named him Phoenix.
Ruth Ann (Ouish) Morehouse, 18, who is pregnant.
Lynette (Squeaky) Fromme, 21.
All of them pleaded innocent today. Rice made a motion to defend himself, and Judge Lucas set Jan. 18 for a hearing. The judge set Feb. 25 for the trial.
The state contends that the accused family members tried to kill Barbara Hoyt so that she could not testify against Susan Atkins at the trial for the murders of actress Sharon Tate and six others. Barbara told the jurors she overheard Susan tell another girl that “Sharon was the last to die.”
At the Tate-LaBianca trial today, attorney Maxwell Keith was scheduled to begin a summation to the jurors in defense of Leslie Van Houten, who is accused of the two LaBianca murders. Keith was appointed to represent her when attorney Ron Hughes disappeared.
But Keith’s summation was postponed until tomorrow, because his oldest daughter had an emergency operation yesterday.
