Linda Kasabian Found in Fla., Will Return

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 4 – Linda Kasabian, arrested in Miami as a material witness for the upcoming trial of Leslie Van Houten, the former Charles Manson follower, is scheduled to make a court appearance Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Dep. Dist. Atty. Stephen Kay, the prosecutor assigned to handle the second Van Houten trial, said Mrs. Kasabian would be brought before Superior Judge Edward Hinz Jr. here.

Kay said she had agreed to leave Florida voluntarily rather than go through an extradition hearing.

Authorities have been seeking Mrs. Kasabian since Miss Van Houten’s conviction for the 1969 murders of a grocery chain operator, Leno LaBianca, and his wife, Rosemary, was overturned by the California Court of Appeals in August.

Beverly Hills attorney Gary Fleischman, who represents Mrs. Kasabian, said last week that she was trying to avoid again becoming a star prosecution witness because she still feared for her life.

“She really wants to avoid getting all wrapped up in this thing again,” Fleischman said. She testified against Manson and several of his “family” members in previous trials.

Dade County, Fla., police said that they took Mrs. Kasabian into custody in Homestead, a community south of Miami, after Los Angeles police detectives informed them Monday where she could be found.

Kay obtained the material witness warrant for Mrs. Kasabian from Judge Hinz last Thursday after submitting considerable evidence that she was attempting to avoid being found and returned.

In the five years since the Manson murder trial, Mrs. Kasabian has spent most of her time in New Hampshire, but dropped out of sight last year after being arrested with a group of several others for setting a bonfire in an open field near Litchfield, N.H.
