Manson Lawyer Hints at Drug Trafficking
Thursday, December 31st, 1970
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 31 – Charles Manson’s lawyer, Mr. Irving Kanarek, attemping to lay the blame for the Sharon Tate murders on Charles “Tex” Watson, expects to complete his appeal to the jury for Manson’s acquittal today.
Mr. Kanarek yesterday described Watson as the “prime mover” in the murders and suggested that he might have been at the Tate house for drug trafficking.
A court has declared Watson, 24, a motor mechanic in the tightly-knit Manson hippie “family”, insane and unfit to stand trial for the Tate murders at present.
Mr. Kanarek said the prosecution had painted a picture of Watson as Manson’s robot and a “puppy dog”.
He added: “We have to step back and take a look at how stupid Mr. Watson is.
“He is a man who has managed to avoid the processes of this court for some time”.
This was a reference to the fact that Watson contested extradition to California from his native Texas for ten months.
“The difference between Charles Manson and Watson is that Watson has an all-American boy appearance,” Mr. Kanarek claimed.
Watson was perhaps wheeling and dealing and going many places where Manson would not be acceptable, because of his appearance.
“We can assume that there was some kind of narcotics trafficking going on at Miss Tate ‘s house, Mr. Kanarek said. “How do we know Watson didn’t go there to take up some narcotics matter?”
Of the prosecution’s star witness, Mrs. Linda Kasabian, Mr. Kanarek said the records showed she was in love with Watson and stole a large sum of money for him.
Mrs. Kasabian said in evidence that she went to the Tate House as look-out and she and the three girl defendants were told by Manson to “Do what Tex tells you.”
Mr. Kanarek alleged that Mrs. Kasabian told her version of the story involving Manson, in order to protect Watson.
Manson was ejected from another court yesterday. After the Tate hearing was adjourned he and other defendants appeared in another court for a hearing on two additional murder charges.
A grand jury has indicted Manson and others for the death of film musician Gary Hinman and the supposed death of stunt man Donald “Shorty” Shea, whose body has never been found.
Manson interjected his opinions throughout the hour-long hearing before being ejected.
I’ve always said it was tex’s plan that got messy because of being on meth
