Susan Murphy, Friend Enter Not-Guilty Pleas

Former Charles Manson cultist Susan Murphy and a companion pleaded innocent Monday to charges of overpowering a federal prison guard on Terminal Island last August and escaping in the guard’s car.

Miss Murphy, 34, and Diane Ellis, 33, entered their pleas in Los Angeles before U. S. District Court Judge Malcolm Lucas. Their trial was set for Nov. 30.

The two women escaped from the federal medium security prison on Terminal Island Aug. 14. They were arrested 12 days later by FBI agents on a street in downtown Portland, Ore.

Miss Murphy, a follower of convicted mass-murderer Manson, was serving a five-year sentence on a conviction of conspiring with Sandra Good to mail threatening letters to businessmen who the women felt were polluting the environment.

Miss Ellis was imprisoned for parole violations following her conviction in a bank holdup.

The two women were taken to the federal correctional facility in San Diego after their arrest in Portland. They have been charged with assaulting a federal officer, escape from confinement and theft of government property.
