$20 Million Libel Suit Dismissed
Friday, June 26th, 1981
LOS ANGELES, Jun. 26 – A $20 million libel suit filed by Irving Kanarek, attorney for convicted mass murderer Charles Manson, against Manson’s prosecutor, Vincent T. Bugliosi and others, over statements in Bugliosi’s best selling book, “Helter Skelter,” was dismissed. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Eli Chernow agreed with Bugliosi that material he had written about Kanarek was privileged and therefore exempt from libel laws, because it was based on actual transcripts of the Manson trial. Other defendants in the libel suit were co-author Curt Gentry and publishers W. W. Norton and Co. and Bantam Books Inc.
