Member of Manson Cult Convicted
Thursday, May 25th, 1972
LOS ANGELES, May 25 – Manson follower Charles A. Lovitt was convicted yesterday of armed robbery stemming from an aborted gun raid in Hawthorne last summer.
A Superior Court jury of nine women and three men deliberated less than two hours before reaching a verdict.
Lovitt’s trial, which lasted nine days, was before Commissioner Michael L. Burke, who scheduled sentencing for June 13.
Lovitt, a lean, dark-haired 20 year old, took the verdict calmly. He conferred briefly with defense attorney George Elber before he was taken back to the County Jail. The gun raid occurred on Aug 21.
Five other followers of cultist Charles Manson await separate trial on similar charges stemming from the incident.
The other defendants were arrested at the surplus store after a shootout with police. The prosecution contends Lovitt, who was arrested three months after the incident, fled.
Lovitt, who testified in his own defense, claimed he wasn’t even in the county when the incident occurred. But a clerk in the surplus store testified that he was with the others.
The gun raid supposedly was to get weapons to free convicted Tate-LaBianca killer Manson from jail.
He just fed the Horses… 😉
