Manson to Parole Board: Stick it

SAN QUENTIN, Feb. 4 — Famed killer Charles told parole officials today to “stick it” because he is not interested in parole and would rather “keep my soul.”

The board obliged, and turned him down for the sixth time since his convictions along with four other “Manson family” members for the ritualistic killing of nine people, including a pregnant actress, in the Los Angeles area in 1971

Manson, 51, leader of the drug-ravaged cult that stunned the nation, was appearing at an automatic hearing before the board for the first time in three years.

“The gist is stick your parole, I’m not interested. I could have parole and have no soul but I will shirk your parole and keep my soul,” Manson said as he quietly read a 20-page handwritten statement.

“I broke no laws, not God’s laws, not man’s law,” he said. “What I preached is beyond the court’s understanding.”

Manson, wearing prison jeans and with a swastika painted on his forehead, said, “I don’t want out of your prison unless I can go with my brothers and sisters. I don’t have anything unless I have my family.”

Four cult members are held in various prisons and all have previously been denied parole. They are Charles “Tex” Watson, 39, Susan Atkins, 37, Patricia Krenwinkel, 37, and Leslie Van Houten, 36.

Manson proclaimed, “I am my own God. I am my own government. I am my own court. I am my own judge. I am my own world.”

In questioning by the three-member board, Manson was asked what his plans were and he answered, “Can’t you understand? This is where I’ve been most of my life.”

Manson’s answer to a question about what he would do if he were released anyway was that he might go to Libya, or to see the ayatollah, or to go to France “because there is someone there I am upset with.”

This prompted a board member to ask if he was rich, and Manson replied, “I’m a con man. I don’t need money.”

Then Manson left the hearing before its conclusion, saying, “I am content wherever I am. I have peace in my mind.”
