Manson Disciple Refused Parole

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Dec. 14 — Bobby Beausoleil, a Manson family disciple convicted of killing a musician two weeks before the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders, was refused parole for the fifth time.

A state parole board refused Thursday to set a release date for Beausoleil, serving a life term for the 1969 torture-slaying of musician Gary Hinman at Hinman’s Topanga Canyon home.

Prosecutor Jeff Jonas, who represented the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office at the hearing at the California Men’s Colony prison where Beausoleil, 37, is incarcerated, voiced strong opposition to the proposed release.

“We are adamantly opposed to Mr. Beausoleil being given a (release) date,” he told the three-man panel. “I don’t find that he has had sufficient time to demonstrate that he is no longer violent.”

The board, two of whose members were former Los Angeles police officers, agreed but said Beausoleil could have another hearing in one year. The panel also advised him to remain “discipline free” as he has since 1981, and to continue his psychiatric and vocational counseling.

In his plea for release, Beausoleil admitted killing Hinman, saying he thought the musician “would send me to prison.”

“I don’t know how to deal with that,” he added in a faltering voice. “I’ve got a good life looking at me…” He then broke into tears and did not continue his statement.

Beausoleil sighed when the board announced its decision but made no further statement.

The killing of Hinman, who refused to join Charles Manson’s “family” of drug-taking youths, preceded by two weeks the murder rampage that included the slaying of actress Sharon Tate and Rosemary and Leno LaBianca and a half-dozen others.

Prosecutors proved that Beausoleil stabbed Hinman to death on the command of Manson, who had earlier come to the musician’s home and sliced Hinman’s ear off with a sword, then sewed it back on with dental floss.

Manson and four followers are serving life terms for the Tate-LaBianca killings. All have been repeatedly refused parole.
