Escape Try Cancels Jail Visits by Former Manson Follower

SACRAMENTO, Jul. 9 — A former Charles Manson follower has lost her bid in federal court to resume visiting her husband in prison.
U.S. District Court Judge Thomas MacBride ruled against Catherine Como after reviewing Folsom prison officials’ assertion that they withdrew her visiting rights after her husband tried to escape last year.
Como is serving a 20-year sentence on several charges, including escape and armed robbery.
The state public defender’s office represented Mrs. Como, the former Catherine “Gypsy” Share in the era when she was a follower of Charles Manson.
Mrs. Como told MacBride her 7-year-old son ”was in dire need of a male figure.” She said Como was not the child’s natural father “but he was with me when I was pregnant, and I consider him to be Paul’s father.”
Prison officials said they had found instructions for operating a pistol, a manual for a radio transmitter and 15 photographs of the on-ramp to Highway 50 at Folsom in Como’s cell.
