Police Seek Manson Case Auto, Driver

LOS ANGELES, Jun. 11 – The Los Angeles Police Dept. has requested public assistance in locating anyone who reportedly gave three members of the Manson family rides to Spahn Ranch following the LaBianca slayings last summer.

Grocery market owner Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary were fatally stabbed last Aug. 10 in their Los Feliz home — a day after actress Sharon Tate and four others were murdered.

Charles Manson and five members of his family are charged with the multiple murders.

Lt. Paul LePage of the robbery-homicide division, said it is believed three members of the family hitched rides in the vicinity of the Golden State Freeway near Griffith Park at Los Feliz Blvd.

Also it is believed, he added, they were let off at Santa Susana Ave. in Chatsworth a few blocks from the Spahn Ranch where Manson and his cult resided at the time.

According to LePage, the automobile which deposited the trio in Chatsworth has been described as being an odd color, possibly pink and of mid-1950 vintage.

The driver of the automobile reportedly was a male Caucasian.

Police are still not certain whether the three obtained more than one ride en route to the old movie ranch

LePage said the three assertedly arrived in Chatsworth between 5:30 and 6 a.m.

Information about the driver or drivers is necessary for the state’s case against Manson and his followers to place them in the area of the LaBianca home at the time of the murder.

According to published accounts of the killings from defendant Susan Atkins, seven members of the family, including Manson, arrived at the LaBianca home.

However, according to Miss Atkins’ story, Manson and three others — defendant Mrs. Linda Kasabian, Patricia Krenwinkel and Gary “Clem” Tufts (not charged) — left in an automobile before murders occurred.

Miss Atkins and codefendant Charles “Tex” Watson and Leslie Van Houten stayed behind and reportedly killed the LaBiancas.

LePage added that after more than seven months of investigation into all possible leads, the Police Dept. has not been able to locate the drivers or automobiles.
