Sandra Good Demands Judge Quit Her Case
Friday, January 9th, 1976
SACRAMENTO, Jan. 9 – Sandra Good demanded today that Federal Judge Thomas J. MacBride disqualify himself from her “death threat” case, saying, “I can show no respect for this court or you.”
The 31-year-old Manson cultist made the demand at her arraignment before MacBride, who on Dec. 16 sentenced sister cult disciple Lynette Fromme to life in prison.
“I have reason to believe you fear for your life from me and therefore have an interest in this trial,” Miss Good said.
Miss Good is accused of one count of conspiring to mail death threats and four counts of making such threats during interstate telephone calls.
Susan “Heather” Murphy, 33, another follower of Charles Manson, was arraigned on the one mail count.
MacBride told Miss Good to submit her motion in writing and then set Jan. 19 for the two women to enter pleas.
The judge said that if he considers Miss Good’s written motion to “be good on its face” he will assign it to another judge for a ruling.
Miss Good said MacBride should disqualify himself because of statements he made when he sen-tenced Miss From me for trying to kill President Ford in Capitol Park Sept. 5.
“Less than a month ago you sentenced my sister, Lynette Fromme, to life in prison,” Miss Good said, recalling the judge’s remarks about the ‘X’ scar on Miss Fromme’s forehead.
“I too wear an ‘X’ on my forehead and I also have ‘X-ed’ myself from your society as you said Miss Fromme did,” she said.
Both woman carved the Xs on their foreheads during Manson’s Los Angeles trial for the Tate-LaBianca murders.
Miss Good said she believes MacBride fears her because she has heard reports that he has bodyguards assigned to him and that he carries a gun.
However, MacBride replied, “I do not carry a gun, except when I go duck hunting.”
