Murder Charge is Dropped Against One of Manson Girls

STOCKTON, Dec. 12 — Stockton Municipal Court Judge Laurence Drivon, acting on a request by the prosecution, yesterday delayed further proceedings against two female followers of Charles Manson and two male companions accused of murdering Lauren Willett.

Murder charges against Lynette (Squeaky) Fromme, 29, were dropped by the District Attorney’s Office, and instead she was charged with being an accessory. However, Drivon refused a request by Miss Fromme’s attorney to release her on her own recognizance, and set her bail at $5,000. As of this she was still in jail.

Deputy San Joaquin County Dist. Atty. Steve Demetras asked for the delay to Jan. 8, telling Drivon his office is awaiting word from the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Laboratory in Washington, DC on evidence in the case.

Demetras said the evidence, sent to the laboratory, includes fingerprints and ballistics.

Mrs. Willett 19, was found shot to death and buried under a house at 720 W. Flora St. Nov. 10 and the Stockton Police immediately arrested five persons and charged them with her death.

They are Michael Monfort, 24; James (Spider) Craig, 33; Nancy Pitman, 24; Priscilla Cooper, 21; and Miss Fromme.

Although Demetras asked for a continuance to next month, he said his office plans to take the matter to the grand jury later this month.

If the jury finds enough evidence to indict the five, the case against the defendant would no longer require a preliminary hearing in Municipal Court but could be sent on to Superior Court.

Besides Mrs. Willett’s murder, Monfort is charged along with William Goucher, 23, with the hold up of a north Stockton liquor store Oct. 30. Monfort, Craig and Goucher have been charged by Sonoma County authorities with murdering Mrs. Willett’s husband, James, 26, in early October.

The charges were lodged against the three men after Willett’s headless body was uncovered from a shallow grave in a wooded area near Guerneville Nov. 8.

The police uncovered Mrs.Willett’s body when they went to the house on Flora Street in search of Monfort and found freshly turned earth, a pick and shovel in the basement of the rented home. Officers said she had been shot once in the head with a .38 caliber pistol.
