2 Women Escapees Receive 10 Years for Beating Guard

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 29 – Susan Murphy and Diane Ellis, who brutally beat a female guard during an escape from the Federal Correctional Institution at Terminal Island last August, were each sentenced in Los Angeles federal court Friday to 10 years in prison.

The two women pleaded guilty last month to assaulting guard Melinda Eisenhart.

U.S. Dist. Judge Malcom M. Lucas said he was imposing the maximum sentence to deter future assaults on prison guards.

The judge said the two women would not begin serving their 10-year sentences until they have completed the prison terms that they are currently serving.

Miss Murphy, 34, a fringe follower of mass murderer Charles Manson, began serving a five-year prison term last March after she was convicted of conspiring to send death threats to business and government leaders.

Miss Ellis, 33, is just about to complete a one-year sentence imposed for escaping from prison just nine days short of her scheduled parole date on a bank robbery charge. She has been in custody on a variety of charges almost constantly since 1964.

The two women beat Miss Eisenhart with metal pipes and a wooden club, causing what Asst. U.S. Atty. Wilfred A. Hearn Jr. said were permanent injuries to Miss Eisenhart which have prevented her from returning to work.

The two escapees took Miss Eisenhart’s car and were fugitives for nearly two weeks before being captured in Portland, Ore.
